The Sacrament of Holy Communion

firstcommunionThe Sacrament of Holy Communion is the sacrament by which we receive God's Body and Blood truly and substantially. It is not a symbol nor a reenactment of the Last Supper that happened over two thousand years ago. It is Jesus, with no time limitations, bringing us to the Last Supper to experience His love and service to us, to share the ultimate gifts, His body and blood. When Catholics receive the Eucharist, we receive Him and He becomes a part of us and we become a part of Him, so that we may bring Him into the world through our actions of love, mercy and forgiveness. Christ entrusted this Most Blessed Sacrament to His bride, the Church for spiritual nourishment and a pledge for eternal life.

First Holy Communion Preparation
The two year First Holy Communion Program is an opportunity for our children to experience the love of God through this sacrament by learning about the Paschal Mystery. The Mystery that is the very center and culmination of Catholic life.

The recommended age to receive this sacrament the first time is Second grade. The following are some criteria to help you determine whether your child should prepare for First Holy Communion:

• Has your child been participating in Sunday Mass on a regular basis?
• Has your child been participating in religious education classes through Catholic school or the parish religious education programs?
• Is your child beginning to know the responses and prayers at Mass?
• Is prayer a regular part of your child's life?
• Does your child exhibit the capacity for reverence that is necessary for sharing in the Eucharistic banquet?
